Range Judging

RANGE JUDGING

The Wyoming FFA Range Judging Competition provides students with an applied understanding of rangeland ecology and management through direct field experience. Designed around Wyoming’s diverse landscapes, the event emphasizes evaluating land based on observable characteristics rather than theoretical examples. Students learn to assess rangelands as working systems that support agriculture, wildlife, and natural resources across the state.

Participants engage in hands-on evaluation at field stations that require identification of range plants, determination of ecological sites, assessment of rangeland condition, and interpretation of habitat suitability for livestock and wildlife. The competition emphasizes sound observation, accurate interpretation, and informed decision-making—skills that reflect how land managers and producers evaluate rangeland health in real-world settings.

Through participation, students develop a deeper understanding of land stewardship and the factors that influence long-term rangeland sustainability. The Range Judging Competition strengthens critical thinking, applied science skills, and environmental awareness, preparing FFA members for continued involvement in agricultural education, natural resource management, and related career pathways.

It’s part of Wyoming Resource Education Days (WyRED), a field-focused program hosted by the Wyoming Section Society for Range Management. Youth and adults learn together about the science and art of natural resource management across our rangelands.
