Wool Judging
The FFA Wool Judging Contest invites students to look beyond the surface and evaluate wool the way producers and buyers do — by understanding quality, value, and characteristics that matter in a real marketplace. In this contest, participants examine wool fleeces and assess traits like fineness, staple length, yield potential, and overall uniformity. They learn to compare samples, make informed judgments, and explain their decisions with clarity and confidence.
This event isn’t just about picking the “best” wool — it’s about why one fleece is stronger, more valuable, or better suited for a particular purpose than another. Students gain hands-on experience with industry-relevant principles of wool evaluation, build their observation and reasoning skills, and practice articulating their findings in a competitive setting. That combination of practical knowledge and real-world thinking is exactly what makes wool judging an engaging challenge.
You don’t need to have grown up around sheep to excel — curiosity, preparation, and willingness to learn go a long way. This contest builds confidence in decision-making and communication — skills that carry far beyond the contest floor.
